Neurodiversity, ADHD & Autism

Why Neurodiversity?

You may have a recent diagnosis or are aware of your neurodivergence for longer. You may suspect that you are neurodivergent, or are self-identifying. Even with the knowledge of a diagnosis, it can be challenging to navigate the many ways that neurodiversity may show up in your life.

I am neurodivergent myself, and I have a particular interest in ADHD, autism and high sensitivity. I am late-diagnosed and I know from lived experience how important it is to work with a therapist who understands how to adapt therapy to neurodivergent needs. I have completed and continue to seek out various professional training on neurodiversity, and I attend regular supervision with a specialist.

We can explore how neurodivergence presents in your life, and find ways to support you in the changes you may seek. Often therapy is only part of a wider treatment plan that we may want to take into account.

How I work with neurodiversity.

We adapt therapy to your neurodivergent needs, based on what you find helpful. This can look like making space for accommodations, for structure and practical approaches, and for creativity. We can focus on specific themes, such as the below, but not limited to:

  • neurodivergent burnout and managing energy

  • masking, authenticity, self trust and sense of self

  • executive functioning, such as issues with motivation and taking intentional action

  • emotion regulation

  • sensory needs, sensory processing, and sensory overload

  • rejection sensitivity

  • justice sensitivity

  • hormonal impact (PMDD, PMS, perimenopause)

  • relationships and couples (ND/ND and ND/NT)

  • processing your diagnosis, grief, or support while you wait for an assessment

  • accommodations and figuring out your needs

  • neurodiversity, identity & culture

  • comorbidities, such as depression and anxiety

  • trauma

  • the nervous system and body-mind connection

  • processing delay

  • neurodivergent strengths

  • education about neurodiversity

  • alexithymia

  • sensory processing sensitivity (SPS), Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)

We can approach therapy through the lens of neurodiversity in some conversations, and not in others. The emphasis is always on what you find helpful and I will stay adaptable to your journey and changing needs.

My integrative practice blends different styles of therapy and allows me to adapt to your personal process and needs. Some of the approaches I draw from are humanistic therapies, such as Gestalt and Transactional Analysis, Internal Family System, ACT, DBT, somatic therapies, mindfulness and compassion-based practice, and some psychodynamic and relational approaches.

I work holistically and apply systems-thinking with deep regard for our interconnectedness. I consider our personal, emotional health as not separate from our bodies, and as not separate from the health of our communities and planet. I also consider context, such as culture, identity, intersectionality, and the impact of the social, political and climate challenges of our times.

I cannot formally diagnose neurodivergence.
